First-Mover Perspective
Ahead of the category.
In 2018, before embodied AI entered the mainstream conversation, Kino Coursey documented an early system for carrying a persistent character across mobile, virtual and physical forms.
"Speaking With Harmony "
Published in Maschinenliebe, the chapter is part of Intima’s technology lineage. It demonstrates long-standing practical authority in conversational systems, expressive interfaces and physical embodiment.

AI Experience
The layers between a model and a meaningful experience.

The Identity Layer
The personality, identity and relationship live in software — not inside the robot itself. That means the same AI companion can maintain continuity across digital experiences and, ultimately, different forms of physical embodiment. This is what makes the system more than a smart device: the relationship persists even when the hardware changes.

The Intelligence + Memory Layer
The system combines conversational intelligence with memory and context: user preferences, conversation history, relevant past interactions and the evolving history of the relationship. Rather than treating every interaction as a new conversation, the companion can build continuity over time — remembering context and using it to shape future interactions.

The Relationship Layer
An AI relationship that can change over time. Interactions are not modeled as isolated prompts and responses. Frequency of interaction, time, context and sentiment can influence the modeled state of the relationship. That gives the character a sense of continuity: the way you interact can influence how the relationship develops.

The Expression + Perception Layer
Turning intelligence into behavior — and giving the system awareness of the physical world. The software translates the character into expressions, gaze, blinking, gestures, animation and other behaviors. At the same time, sensory inputs — including vision, face and eye tracking, orientation, movement and touch — allow the system to understand what is happening around it. Together, these systems begin to close the loop between conversation, perception and physical response.

The Embodiment Middleware Layer
RealDoll’s technology was designed so that the AI character could first exist independently in a digital environment. Its intentions and behaviors could then be translated into physical actions — facial movement, touch responses, sensors, servos and other forms of embodiment. That architecture creates an embodiment middleware layer between conversational AI and physical devices. As AI relationships become more pervasive, the opportunity becomes much larger than building one proprietary AI companion. The same infrastructure can ultimately allow a person to bring an AI relationship they have already created elsewhere into the physical world. The chatbot can change. The AI model can change. The hardware can change. The embodiment layer remains the bridge between them.

The Platform Opportunity
Infrastructure designed to remain valuable as intelligence and hardware evolve. Together, these layers create a system for carrying identity, memory, relationships and intelligent behavior across digital and physical experiences. Models will advance. Devices will change. Intima is building the connective infrastructure that allows the experience to evolve with them.
